22222222ERA Coalition Statement Ahead of President Biden’s State of the Union Address
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 7, 2023
Washington, DC –– Ahead of President Biden’s State of the Union Address, ERA Coalition / Fund for Women’s Equality President and CEO Zakiya Thomas released the following statement:
“As President Biden prepares to deliver his State of the Union address, we urge him to acknowledge that the Equal Rights Amendment has fulfilled all requirements to be added to the Constitution and clearly and forcefully call on the U.S. Archivist to publish it, as their statutory duty requires. We also urge President Biden to call on Congress to affirm the validity of the ERA and remove the time limit to remove any doubt that it’s valid and enforceable today.
“As opponents of equality continue to roll back the rights of women and LGTBQ+ persons across the country, our 100 year fight is as fiercely urgent as it’s ever been. We won’t give up our fight until the ERA is enshrined in the Constitution, because our rights depend on it.”
The ERA Coalition was founded in 2014 to bring concerted, organized action to the effort to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. The ERA Coalition has a sister organization, the Fund for Women’s Equality, which promotes public education and outreach on the need for constitutional equality. Composed of more than 280 organizations across the country, the Coalition provides education and advocacy on Constitutional Equality.
While the effort to amend the Constitution to include sex equality began nearly a century ago, our renewed efforts are centered on women of color (African American, Asian American/Pacific Islander, Latina, and Native American), gender-nonconforming and transgender women and girls, and nonbinary people – those who are most impacted by systemic inequities.
