Washington, DC — Today, President Biden made history by declaring that the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) is the 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution.

To commemorate this historic milestone we gathered in front of the National Archives for a press conference and rally celebrating the efforts of those fighting for the Equal Rights Amendment and calling on the Archivist Colleen Shogan to do her job without delay. Speakers at the event reaffirmed the Equal Rights Amendment’s importance in protecting reproductive rights, gender-affirming healthcare, and LGBTQ+ rights.

The ERA Coalition was joined by US Representative Cori Bush as well as Coalition partners and members of our National Strategy Task Force, including AAUW, American Constitution Society, Black Women’s Roundtable, Equality Now, Feminist Front, League of Women Voters US, National Council of Jewish Women, NOW National, YWCA-US, and Young Feminist Party.

“It’s taken a century to get women into the Constitution even though we live in a democracy. Never give up!” Gloria Steinem, Feminist, American journalist and social activist.

“This is OUR fight,” said Zakiya Thomas, President & CEO of the ERA Coalition. “Anti-equality politicians will try to roll back President Biden’s action, but we are prepared to defend the ERA at every turn. Equality is non-negotiable, and we will not back down.”

“For ten years the ERA Coalition has been working towards this moment—step by step we built a movement that now comprises over 300 partners—and most of America—who believe that we all deserve to be seen—and treated equally. The ERA will make that happen,” said Carol Jenkins, Chair, ERA Coalition Forward

President Biden’s words mark a pivotal moment in the decades-long fight for gender equality. By declaring the Equal Rights Amendment as the law of the land, he follows in the footsteps of the late President Jimmy Carter, who also stood firm against those placing roadblocks to sex equality when the ERA passed Congress in 1972.

We will continue our mission to see the Equal Rights Amendment implemented, ensuring that everyone in the United States is protected from gender discrimination.
