Washington, DC –– Following the news that Congresswomen Cori Bush (MO-01) and Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) have formally launched a historic, first-of-its-kind Congressional Caucus for the Equal Rights Amendment, ERA Coalition President and CEO Zakiya Thomas released the following statement:
“We applaud Congresswomen Bush and Pressley, true leaders in the fight for equality, for launching a historic Congressional caucus reaffirming the Equal Rights Amendment as the 28th Amendment to the Constitution and centering traditionally marginalized voices who stand to gain the most from sex equality. Advocates began this fight 100 years ago, and those voices have been critical in drafting, advancing, and organizing to get the ERA added to the Constitution. In the fight for equality in America, Black women have led the way for centuries, so it’s no surprise that Black women are leading the fight in Congress today.
“As Congress considers a critical bipartisan resolution to eliminate any doubt that the ERA is the law of the land, we’re grateful for the House members joining the ERA caucus to establish constitutional sex equality as a national priority. We’ve witnessed opponents of equality take unprecedented steps to roll back our rights, showing just how fiercely urgent our fight is today as it was a century ago. We have a chance to remedy our country’s long history of inequality, and we must seize the opportunity. Our rights depend on it.”
