Why We’re Still Fighting for the Equal Rights Amendment
October 09, 2024
The ERA Coalition, an organization led by women of color, represents millions of people and more than 200 allied organizations whose common mission is to see the Equal Rights Amendment ratified and implemented within the United States Constitution. As we continue our fight towards the constitutional protections of those on the account of sex, many new companies, businesses, individuals, and organizations have followed suit and joined forces to become members alongside the ERA Coalition. As a show of our gratitude and continued support, we would like to take a moment to spotlight a few of our Coalition partners this month: Alice Paul Institute, VA Ratify ERA, and Mormons for the ERA. Thank you so much to all of our new and continuing partners for their essential support in pursuit of the continued ratification and implementation of the Equal Rights Amendment within the United States Constitution!
Alice Paul Institute
The primary mission of the Alice Paul Institute is to honor the legacy of Alice Paul’s work for gender equality through education and leadership development by utilizing an expansive and inclusive understanding of the terms “women” and “girls” and welcoming the participation of trans women and girls, non-binary and gender non-conforming individuals, and anyone else who identifies with women and girls. The Alice Paul Institute works heavily towards the ratification and implementation of the Equal Rights Amendment, joining the ERA Coalition in recognizing its historic weight. Confirming the ERA as an amendment for both men and women, noting that issues of custody, employment, and fair wages are important to both sexes and the ERA would guarantee equal legal rights without regard to sex, the Alice Paul Institute futher asserts that the ERA would affirm the very purpose that began with the writing of the U.S. Constitution, being the basic human right of constitutional protection.
VA Ratify ERA
VAratifyERA was a volunteer, nonpartisan grassroots campaign that supported ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment in Virginia, working with many organizations across the commonwealth and nationally who supported Virginia’s ratification. Today, leadership from VAratifyERA is actively working to ensure that the state’s historical efforts will be explicitly reflected when the 28th Amendment becomes enshrined within the United States Constitution. VAratifyERA is working alongside the ERA Coalition in ensuring the ERA’s ratification is not lost amongst bureaucracy or lack of momentum, working tirelessly everyday until its actualized implementation.
Mormons for the ERA
Mormons for the ERA came together because of the shared history and common community from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with the primary goal to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. By being committed to helping educate the public and political leaders on the ERA, raising consciousness regarding the daily inequalities women face, and advocating and lobbying the government for actions necessary for ERA ratification, Mormons for the ERA are dedicated to doing everything required to finally amend the U.S. Constitution. Mormons for the ERA joined forces with the ERA Coalition to continue spreading information regarding the importance of the ERA’s implementation, and to grow their network to reach more women within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to empower them towards a common goal.
