Washington DC - We are profoundly disturbed by the offensive remarks made at Donald Trump’s recent rally that perpetuate stereotypes that demean entire communities including Latinos, especially Puerto Ricans, Black people and women. While Donald Trump's campaign may try to distance itself from these statements, there is a pattern of using such rhetoric, coupled with phrases like "immigrant invasion," which underscores a troubling stance on equality.
Politicians who condone or tolerate this divisive language are unlikely to champion a fair and inclusive nation. This is why voting for candidates committed to equality, as reflected in support for the Equal Rights Amendment, must be a priority. Enacting the ERA would formally affirm our commitment to protecting the dignity of all individuals under the law and counteract the prejudice based on sex/gender that continues to divide us. Now more than ever, voters must choose leaders who stand unequivocally for an equal and just society.
###
The ERA Coalition is a movement of movements, comprising over 300 partner organizations nationwide, and representing 80 million individuals. We advocate for transformative change and spearhead both community and political movements aimed at securing Constitutional recognition. We increase public understanding of the need for codifying the equal treatment of people on the basis of sex in the Constitution, and the need to end sex inequality in all its forms. This is what unites us all.
