Los Angeles, CA – April 30, 2024 – On Sunday, May 5, 2024, In collaboration with the Netflix Is A Joke Festival and the Kookaburra Lounge, actor/comedian Lisa Ann Walter of Abbott Elementary will host a special comedy night in support of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). Walter, a longtime women’s rights advocate will take center stage at the the only woman-owned comedy club in LA, Kookaburra Lounge.
The Kookaburra Lounge, owned by the esteemed comedian Katie Cazorla, sets the stage for Lisa Ann Walter's comedy special and promises an evening of laughter. Members of the hit show Abbot Elementary, will also add their star power to the show and shine a spotlight on the urgency of publishing the ERA and ensuring its rightful place in the U.S. Constitution.
This event coincides with the campaign, Creatives for the ERA lead by actor and activist Alyssa Milano. The campaign, supported by an impressive number of influential figures including Lisa Ann Walter, Rosario Dawson, Pedro Pascal, and Mark Ruffalo, sends a clear message to government officials: the time to publish the ERA now.
“It’s very exciting to be one of the first comics to perform at Katie Cazorla’s Kookaburra Lounge -the only woman owned comedy club in Los Angeles, and the first to be owned by a Female Comic” says Lisa Ann Walter. “We are both very honored to contribute proceeds from the show to the ERA coalition. Come have a laugh with me and some of my Abbott Elementary costars!”
“I’m so honored to be able to work with Lisa Ann Walter and the ERA coalition combined in one night to raise awareness and also have a good time. I feel like I built a platform not just for comedians or musicians to feel like they’re included, but also a safe working environment for women run by women.” Says Katie Cazorla, owners of the Kookaburra Lounge.
Despite being ratified in 2020, the ERA's publication in the U.S. Constitution remains pending, awaiting action from the U.S. Archivist. Once published, the ERA will provide explicit protections against sex discrimination and legal protections in critical areas such as pay equity, employment, reproductive health, gender-based violence, financial services, housing, and more.
Alyssa Milano, ERA Coalition board member, echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the overwhelming public support for the ERA. "Our daughters deserve it. Our sons need to know it’s true. And if we’re to continue to be considered a nation with any moral authority, it has to happen now."
“It's no joke that it's taken 100 years for the ERA to be published. We're closer than even and the time for action is now. Creatives and advocates nationwide are standing together, demanding that the voices of millions be heard," says Zakiya Thomas, President & CEO of the ERA Coalition. "Join us in this historic push for equality and justice."
As the momentum builds and the call for sex equality grows louder, Lisa Ann Walter and her fellow creatives are committed to ensuring that not one more year passes without the publication of the Equal Rights Amendment. Proceeds will benefit the ERA Coalition.
