Happy 2024! With the new year officially underway, it is a good time to reflect on not only our successes on an individual and global level but also the setbacks we have faced. Looking to the future, we must now continue to fight for equality, regardless of sex. Here are some ways we can make change happen in 2024.

Check out what is happening locally

Throughout the year, many local organizations host events to raise awareness about certain issues or to fundraise. It is often a very easy way to participate in the fight for equality as the events happen within your community: donating to a local women’s shelter, buying goods at a bake sale, taking part in a demonstration, etc. Social media is the best way to find out the ‘where-and-when’ of these activities because they are usually updated more often than organizations’ websites.

Speaking of social media, you can also use your own account to uplift the voices of marginalized communities. Instead of talking over people who are trying to get their voices heard, give them a platform to speak. If you find a social media creator’s content particularly inspiring or thought-provoking, repost or tag those accounts so your followers can also hear what they have to say. Listen to them and learn the most effective ways you can support your community and fight for equality without overshadowing their voices.

Hundreds of equality advocates marched from the White House to the US Capitol, demanding publication of the Equal Rights Amendment on December 13, 2023.

Go nationally

Contacting your representatives is one of the most important things you can do to fight for gender equality because legal change promotes social change. As a member of your representative’s constituency, your active engagement in the community puts pressure on them to make our communities more equal. You can check out our Take Action page for specific issues to contact your elected officials on!

Additionally, you can participate in nationwide demonstrations that spread the urgency of equality. Protesting is one of the best ways for ordinary citizens’ voices to be heard, especially about topics that affect every person in the US like gender equality. Some marches, like the Women’s March, happen annually, so be sure to keep an eye out for when those happen. Social media is often the best way to keep up-to-date on when protests happen, but they can also be found on websites like the Women’s March

Think globally

Gender and sex-based discrimination is not unique to the US. It is crucial that, in such an interconnected world, we also continue to uplift women around the globe. Supporting international organizations that are fighting for equality is one way you can help make change. Countless groups work within communities to initiate social change, as well as advocate for necessary legal change on the federal level.

Last but not least, we must continue to educate ourselves. In an ever-changing world, is it crucial to learn more about other communities and perspectives. This way, we can create a more understanding and equal world. Equality is constantly evolving, so it is important that you stay up-to-date and informed about your rights and how you can support other communities.
