The ERA Coalition launches, "The Legacy We Deserve: ERA Now - Call on Biden to Put the Equal Rights Amendment in the Constitution"
November 14, 2024
For Immediate Release --
(February 12, 2020) Washington, D.C. -- Tomorrow, the House of Representatives will vote on H.J. Res 79 to remove the so-called time limit that was included by Congress in the preamble to the Equal Rights Amendment when it was passed in 1972. Removing this time limit will put to bed legal arguments being made by opponents of equality following the ERA’s ratification by Virginia on January 27th, 2020 – the 38th and final state needed to complete the ratification process to amend the Constitution. With the House vote behind us, we urge Senator McConnell to bring S.J. Res 6 to the Senate floor so the Senate, too, can vote to remove the time limit. Our polling shows that 94% of Americans want the Equal Rights Amendment to be part of the Constitution. In 2020, women should no longer be second-class citizens in the United States of America.
We thank Rep Jackie Speier for sponsoring the House bill and we are also grateful to Rep. Carolyn Maloney for her longtime support of the Equal Rights Amendment. Congressman Jerry Nadler kept his promise to hold a hearing on the ERA if he became Chair of the Judiciary Committee. Leader Steny Hoyer brought the bill to the floor of the House for this week’s vote. Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been a champion for the Equal Rights Amendment for years. We are grateful to all of these leaders and to all of those Members of Congress who voted for equality.
