Why We’re Still Fighting for the Equal Rights Amendment
October 09, 2024
Today Chief Patron House Delegate Jennifer Carroll Foy's ERA resolution HJ 1 was voted out of the House Privileges and Elections Committee by a vote of 13-9. The ERA had been stopped there many times before.
We are happy to report that both the Senate and the House of Delegates in Virginia will vote on their ERA resolutions tomorrow, Wednesday, January 15, 2020. Much excitement and anticipation surround this historic time--we will be there to stand witness to equality. It may have taken nearly a century since Alice Paul first introduced the ERA, but we are about to see that quest to ban sex discrimination in the U.S. Constitution realized -- and it is so sweet. Our statement:
For immediate release
(Jan 14, 2020) Richmond, VA
The ERA Coalition was thrilled to witness the Equal Rights Amendment voted out of the Virginia House of Delegates committee for the first time in the state’s history today. It now moves to the floor of the House of Delegates where a vote is expected on Wednesday at the same time the Virginia Senate votes on its ERA bill.
Once Virginia ratifies the ERA, the amendment will have met the requirements set forth in Article V of the Constitution for amendments. Exactly one hundred years after women got the right to vote, women will finally have equal constitutional rights.
